Travel hacks: How to stay healthy on airplane flights

Do you have plans for another trip soon? If so, you’ll find some useful tips below on how to maintain your physical and mental health while in the air. Understandably, the global pandemic has put an increased focus on staying safe and healthy while travelling, but there are also a number of other things you can do before, during and after the flight to ensure that you stay as healthy as possible when you’re flying.

Wash your hands regularly

Before boarding – and during – any flight, it’s essential that you wash your hands and avoid touching your face and eyes. This is one of the easiest ways to help prevent germs that you come into contact with from reaching your mucous membranes. Always try to carry a hand sanitiser with you, too, for when you’re not near a bathroom. On board a VistaJet flight, masks, gloves, and sanitiser will be provided for you.

Stay hydrated

Flights are never very relaxing on your body. When you’re travelling by airplane, dehydration can be a major issue. The lack of humidity and oxygen-thin air can often result in headaches or fatigue. That’s why you must keep a bottle of water handy at all times. According to the Aerospace Medical Association, you should drink approximately 220ml of water for every hour you’re in the air.

Perform regular stretches and exercises

When you’re in the air, it’s vital that you try to stay as active as possible. Longer flights may not only be uncomfortable for some passengers, but also potentially quite dangerous. Of course, side effects of long-haul flights are different for everyone and depend heavily on an individual’s personal situation and health.

While travel-related deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is rare in healthy people, long distance travel can increase the chances of it. In order to reduce your risk, you should stand up, stretch and perform exercises while you’re on the plane.

The good news is that there are a number of great airplane exercises for long flights that you can do. These include:

All of the above exercises can be repeated 10-15 times every thirty minutes to one hour throughout the flight.

On a private aircraft with VistaJet, your cabin will be your home away from home, meaning that you can do these exercises in a spacious area, with complete privacy.

And if you’re wondering, ‘does exercise help jet lag?’, the answer is yes. Exercise is a game changer for realigning the body and regulating your sleeping pattern. It also plays a key role in helping to acclimatise across the stages of pre, during and post travel. So, ensure that you exercise before a long-haul flight, as well as during – and after!

Wind down and get some rest

Flying provides the perfect opportunity to get some well-deserved rest. Sleep not only helps to improve your attention and concentration, but also helps to keep your heart healthy and your immune system strong. Furthermore, it plays an important part in looking after your mental health; getting good rest is invaluable for reducing stress levels.

Whether you’re travelling for work or leisure, there’s no doubt that you’d like to get some rest on the plane. With VistaJet’s Ultimate Sky Sleep package, we can ensure that your flight will be a truly restful experience.
