How to work on a plane | VistaJet Travel Hacks

Whether you work for an international organisation and regularly fly for business meetings, or you’re one of the growing number of digital nomads who travel the globe seeking adventure and another way of life, working on a plane affords you a rare opportunity to get work done uninterrupted.

As leaders in global travel, we know a thing or two about working at 38,000 feet, which is why we’ve created this handy guide to help you get the most out of working on a plane to ensure you have your most productive commute yet.

Daytime flight times

Where possible you should choose flights with daytime take-offs. This will help you get into the mindset of working on a plane. If the flight is in the evening, especially if you’ve already had a day at work, you might not be able to perform to your normal high standard.

If you’re flying to Europe, you’ll only have a few hours of productivity, whereas long-haul flights will afford you more of a ‘working day’. If you’re travelling to a destination with a big time difference, you’ll want to choose a flight time that coincides with your destination’s working hours to help you acclimatise.

Of course, when you choose VistaJet you can tailor your travel plans to assist you with working on a plane.

Onboard facilities

When working on a plane you’ll want to make sure the onboard facilities will accommodate your requirements. Perhaps the most important commodity in today’s world is the ability to connect to reliable and fast Wi-Fi. Most planes do have Wi-Fi, but it’s always worth checking with your airline if it’s available. With VistaJet, Wi-Fi is available on all our planes to ensure you can stay connected, even when you’re miles above the office. Whether you want to take full advantage of the onboard Wi-Fi or you’d prefer to unplug for the duration of your flight, having the option to answer emails gives you that peace of mind.

Similarly, when working on a plane, you’ll need to make sure you have enough room. No matter if you’re creating a presentation on your laptop or looking over paperwork, having ample space to work is an important aspect of achieving productivity on a flight.

On a commercial flight, that may not be possible. However, when you charter a flight, you’re guaranteed more than enough space for all your needs – you can even host a mid-air meeting with colleagues.

Plane-friendly tasks

A day or two before your flight, take the time to think about the work you need to get done prior to your arrival, and prioritise which tasks can easily be done on board. Having a clear idea of what you can and need to do will help you have a productive flight. And remember to have downtime on your journey too.

Of course, you won’t be able to tackle all of your normal day-to-day jobs, but there are still tasks you can complete on a flight, including answering emails, creating presentations, drawing up future plans, and additional reading.

Packing essentials

Working on a plane can present more challenges than working in an office or working from home, but you can negate some of the extra hassle by packing the essentials.

Firstly, ensure that all your electronics are fully charged before setting off and pack chargers and adapters in your carry-on. Packing a pair of noise-cancelling headphones will help you concentrate on your work, even if you’re only travelling with colleagues. And of course, a good book is essential when you need to take a break – thanks to the VistaJet Library, you’ll have access to a curated collection of books for all tastes and time frames.
